Setup
From unboxing to first knock.
HoneyBox is built to be boring to install and fascinating to watch.
1. Power and network
Connect HoneyBox to power and to your LAN (Ethernet or as directed in your kit instructions). Wait for it to boot — typically under a minute.
2. Open the LAN web UI
From a computer on the same network, open the device’s local address shown in the quick-start card (or discover it via your router’s client list). You’ll reach the HoneyBox configuration interface hosted on the device.
3. Configure services
Enable the protocols you want to emulate — SSH, RDP, SMB, HTTP, and the rest. Start with a focused set if you’re new; expand once you’re comfortable reading the logs.
4. Confirm SD logging
Ensure the SD card is seated. Trigger a test connection from another machine on your LAN and verify an entry appears in the logs.
5. Optional alerts & PWA
Set optional email alerts if you want nudges. Install the companion PWA from app.localhoneypot.com while on your LAN for phone-friendly management.
Safe placement tips
- Prefer a segmented IoT or lab VLAN when available.
- Don’t port-forward HoneyBox to the public internet unless you fully understand the risk model.
- Treat logs as sensitive — they can include attacker IPs and payloads.
